The refreshed Utah 50 Goldback celebrates our capstone virtue Libertas, or liberty, through the historic Golden Spike Ceremony held on May 10, 1869 at Promontory Summit. On this day, the nation's first transcontinental railroad was completed, forever transforming the nation. Libertas drives the final blow to the legendary golden spike, her belt adorned with the Utah state seal. The UV layer uncovers a band with the state flag around her left arm and a California gull flying above. Behind her, a steam locomotive resembles the historic Jupiter train.
This pivotal moment demonstrated the very essence of liberty--opening the land, uniting people, and expanding freedom across the continent. Written across the bottom is the enduring principle: “Proclaim liberty throughout all the land.” --Leviticus 25:10
