The Idaho 25 Goldback represents the virtue Scientia (Knowledge) and honors Idaho’s role in a groundbreaking moment in scientific history. In 1951, Experimental Breeder Reactor I (EBR-I) near Arco became the first power plant in the world to generate electricity from nuclear energy, later powering the entire town of Arco in 1955. The artwork features a scientist standing before equations that represent the fundamental principles of nuclear physics, symbolizing the pursuit of discovery and innovation. This achievement helped establish Idaho as a global center for nuclear research, now carried forward by the Idaho National Laboratory. Inscribed below is a quote from Idaho native and television inventor Philo T. Farnsworth: “There’s nothing worth knowing that isn’t difficult.”
